Support Georgia John Deere workers on strike!

On October 14th, nearly 10,000 Auto Workers members at John Deere facilities across the country went on strike after more than 90% of the membership rejected the company’s proposal that included measly wage increases and cutting the pension for new hires. John Deere is in the midst of its most profitable year ever. The farm equipment manufacturer expects to rake in $5.7 to $5.9 billion in net income this year, far exceeding its previous high of $3.5 billion in 2013. At the Deere distribution center in McDonough, GA, more than 100 workers are on strike to secure a better future for their families. While the company invests in tens of thousands of dollars in aesthetic changes like painting part of the shop floor green, workers work in the crowded, un-air-conditioned warehouse that Deere splits with Home Depot to save money (which provides air-conditioning for its employees next door). This means working in 115-degree temperatures in the summer, not receiving hazard pay despite being classified as essential workers during the pandemic and rushing to pick and ship orders for Deere’s record profits while managers sit in their air-conditioned offices. The workers are seeking to keep up with the rising cost of living that most Georgians are experiencing working for a company that needs to do the right thing.
